How It Happened
GENEVA, N.Y. –
Danielle Alba's second-quarter tally proved to be all Lebanon Valley needed in a 1-0 victory over William Smith College in the William Smith Field Hockey Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Flying Dutchmen improved to 1-4, while the Herons dropped to 2-2.
Just 27 minutes into the second quarter, after
Hannah Shirey's penalty corner, LVC's initial shot was blocked, but Alba was there to put the rebound into the back of the net to give the visiting Dutchmen a 1-0 advantage. For the remainder of the period, LVC's defense held the Herons without a shot and went into the third with the 1-0 lead.
In the third, LVC continued to limit William Smith's scoring chances, but with 26 seconds, the Herons were awarded a penalty corner, but Libby Maxwell's shot was blocked and LVC kept its narrow lead heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter, William Smith started to generate more scoring opportunities early on. 5:41 into the frame, Lea Mateo's shot was saved by
Corinne Kearney. The Herons were then awarded back-to-back penalty corners, but couldn't crack LVC's stout defense and William Smith was unable to find the equalizer and the Dutchmen hung on for the 1-0 victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Alba finished with one goal and four total shots.
-
Emily Kline had a team-high two shots on goal.
- Kearney needed to make just one save to earn the shutout victory.
