Stevens 3, Lebanon Valley 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15)
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on day two of the Swarthmore Invitational this afternoon, both by 3-1 scores. LVC fell to Stevens to start the day and then was dropped by
Swarthmore in their final match of the weekend. The Dutchmen fall to 2-5 on the year, Stevens is now 6-0 while Swarthmore sits at 3-3.
How It Happened
- In the opening set, the two teams would trade runs throughout and the Dutchmen held a late 19-16 advantage over Stevens. The Ducks would catch fire down the stretch and win nine of the final 12 points to take the opening set.
- The Dutchmen would respond in the second set by jumping out to an early 12-6 lead. They would ride that advantage through the remainder of the set and hold on to win 25-22 in the second set to tie the match up 1-1.
- The Ducks flipped the script in the third set as they were the ones jumping ahead with a controlling 18-9 lead. The Dutchmen would win five straight points to crawl their way back in to the set but Stevens answered with four straight points of their own to push their lead back out to eight. They would hold off a furious LVC comeback effort and the Dutchmen fell 25-23 in the third set.
- The fourth set was controlled by the Ducks throughout. LVC led 1-0 before the Ducks took the lead and never relinquished it, winning the fourth set 25-15 to take the match 3-1.
Inside The Numbers
- Reily Shelly led all players with 15 kills on the day. Mikiah Sangrey also finished with double digit kills with 10.
- Parker Adkins led Stevens with 13 kills.
- Ali Whitworth led LVC with 27 assists. Stevens' Kathleen Riegner led all players with 42 helpers.
- Kasey Thomas led the Dutchmen with 30 digs.
- Stevens finished with nine blocks and the Dutchmen made eight blocks of their own.
Swarthmore 3, Lebanon Valley 1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-19, 25-19)
How It Happened
- In the opening set, the two teams traded blows early on with the Dutchmen holding a narrow 7-6 lead. Swarthmore would then rattle of six straight points to grab a 12-7 advantage. The Dutchmen were unable to recapture the lead as they dropped a narrow first set, 25-23.
- LVC was in control of the second set as they led for a majority of the play. With the set still in the balance, LVC held a 14-10 lead and would score five consecutive points to balloon their lead to nine. They would cruise to a 25-17 set win to tie the match up 1-1.
- A back-and-forth third set saw LVC trailing by just a pair at 18-16 late in the set. Swarthmore would go on to win seven of the final 10 points to claim the pivotal third set 25-19.
- Swarthmore would start the final set with four straight points and would lead wire-to-wire. LVC pulled within a single point a few times in the set but couldn't get over the hump as they fell 25-19 in the fourth set and 3-1 overall.
Inside The Numbers
- Reily Shelly (19) and Mikiah Sangrey (13) finished with the two most kills in the game.
- Kasey Thomas tied her career-high with 34 digs.
- Swarthmore's Tyson Sierra led both teams with 52 digs of her own.
- LVC held a 13-6 advantage in service aces.
- Both teams finished the game with six blocks.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen continue MAC Commonwealth play their next time out as they travel to take on Albright College on Tuesday evening. Game time in Reading, Pa. is slated for 7 p.m.
