ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley baseball team split the second doubleheader with Widener this season on Wednesday afternoon. The Dutchmen took the opener 2-1 in a low-scoring affair before falling in the nightcap by a score of 9-4. LVC now sits at 11-7, 10-4 MACC while the Pride are now 10-8, 7-7 MACC.
Hits were few and far between in the opener of today's doubleheader, headlined by
Tanner Rock who held the Widener offense in check all game long en route to the complete-game win. The Dutchmen would get on the board in the first inning after picking up two of their five hits for the entire game.
Chris DeClerico walked followed by back-to-back singles by
Michael Leri and
Mike Bulgia to bring around DeClerico and grab the early 1-0 lead.
LVC would take advantage of some wild Widener pitching in the second inning as they walked twice and a
Bryan Towers single would bring home
Andrew Miles who led off the frame with a free pass. Meanwhile on the mound,
Tanner Rock was cruising along his first time through the Pride lineup holding Widener without a hit and striking out five batters in the first three innings.
Widener would finally get to Rock in the top of the sixth as they scored their only run of the game to cut the deficit in half. Three straight singles by Widener hitters would load the bases with no out, but Rock would bear down and limit the damage with the Pride's lone run coming via sacrifice fly. Rock would strike out two more in the inning and LVC headed to the bottom of the sixth up just one.
Rock came back out in the seventh to try to complete the game and he would do so, retiring the first two batters on weak ground balls. The Pride would get the tying run on first but he would be caught stealing at second to end the game and give LVC the 2-1 win.
Inside The Numbers
- Tanner Rock picked up his third win of the season by tossing a complete-game gem allowing just six hits and the one earned run while striking out eight and walking none.
- Mike Bulgia continued his hot stretch at the plate picking up two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Bryan Towers picked up the other RBI that proved to be the game-winner.
- Widener's Alex Zilli was strong out of the bullpen, throwing 3.1 innings of shutout ball allowing just two hits and racking up five K's.

The nightcap saw much more offense than the opener, especially in the later innings of the ball game. The two starters,

Widener would wake the bats up in the fifth however, as they erupted for eight runs in the frame. The Pride used five hits and took advantage of some free passes to rack up the eight runs. The first run of the game came on a Matt Samson single up the middle which was then followed by a walk and a two-run double by Anthony Boccio to put Widener ahead by three. The Pride weren't finished as the big blow came with two outs when Brandon Reis doubled to deep left-center that brought home three runners and LVC suddenly found themselves down 8-0 with three at-bats remaining.
The Dutchmen would get one run back in bottom half of the fifth without registering a hit. A pair of walks set the table and an RBI-groundout by
Mitch Rickabaugh got LVC on the board. The Pride would answer with a run of their own in the top of the sixth to put the lead back to eight.
In the bottom of the sixth, LVC looked to crawl back into the game when
Conor Smith launched a three-run homer to right field to pull the Dutchmen within five. LVC would start the bottom of the seventh with a pair of walks but would be unable to score any runs as they fell 9-4.
