How It Happened
HERSHEY, Pa. – Lebanon Valley and Neumann played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday evening in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action as the two teams wrapped up their home-and-home series. The Flying Dutchmen, however, picked up the extra conference point thanks to a 1-0 win in the shootout. LVC now sits at 2-0-1, 2-0-1 UCHC, while the Knights moved to 1-1-2, 1-1-2 UCHC.

For much of the first period, both goaltenders were stellar, but the Dutchmen broke through with just over five minutes remaining in the opening period when Blake Tosto found the back of the net off assists from Darion Benchich and Tyler Romel. LVC held Neumann off the scoresheet for the rest of the first and took a 1-0 advantage into the second period.

In the second period, the netminders continued to stop each shot they saw, and the game remained a 1-0 lead for LVC going into the third, but 45 seconds into the period, Danny Cangelosi was tripped on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. He took advantage of the opportunity and snuck one past Aidan Richardson to even the game at 1-1. Richardson was impressive down the stretch and made 13 saves in the third and the game went into a 3-v-3 overtime period.

Richardson's notable play carried over into the extra period, as he made some huge saves for the Dutchmen and seven overall to help send the game into a shootout. Brad Viola netted the only goal in the shootout and Richardson stopped all three shots he saw, as LVC picked up a the crucial extra UCHC point thanks to the 1-0 win in the shootout.
