How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley women's basketball team were edged by Alvernia for the second night in a row, 63-55, in a defensive struggle that saw neither offense light it up from the floor. The Dutchmen drop to 2-6 while the Golden Wolves now sit at 2-2.
The Dutchmen began the game with two quick buckets to grab an early lead but Alvernia responded with seven straight points to flip the game with the Golden Wolves up 7-4. Midway through the first quarter,
Emily Mealey knocked down a corner three-pointer to tie the game up 7-7 and a
Sofia Bowers jumper in the final seconds of the quarter gave LVC a slim 10-9 lead after one.
In the second, the game was tied 14-14 with 8:06 left in the half when both offenses went dry and neither team recorded a point for over four minutes until a Jordan Karmonick three for Alvernia broke the drought. LVC would go into halftime trailed 24-20.
The Golden Wolves came out of halftime on fire as they opened up a 15-2 run in the first 5:26 of the half that saw Alvernia knock down three of their five three-pointers in the game. LVC would clamp down on defense and found a rhythm of their own at the offensive end, closing out the third quarter on a 12-0 run, ten of the points coming from
Kennedy Kuffa.
The game would be played within five to eight points for a majority of the fourth quarter and with 2:09 left in the contest, LVC would elect to intentionally foul Alvernia and send them to the foul line to try to extend the game. The Golden Wolves would knock down 14 of 21 foul shots in the final stanza to keep LVC out of striking distance and hold off the Dutchmen 63-55.
