How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. –
Brendan Ward threw a complete-game shutout in Lebanon Valley's 3-0 win over Eastern University in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth Baseball action.
Ward cruised all day on the bump and needed just 76 pitches for the shutout. Ward retired the Eagles in order in four separate innings and never allowed a runner to reach third base. Also in the game,
Bryan Towers reached a milestone and recorded his 100th career hit.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Flying Dutchmen manufactured the game's first run.
Nico Santoro began the inning with a single up the middle, and
Ethan Hurd followed with a five-pitch walk. After
Luke Blair's flyout to center field allowed Santoro to advance to third,
Bryan Towers turned the lineup over with a single through the left side to score Santoro.
LVC gave Ward some insurance in the bottom of the sixth with
Conor Smith's sac-fly that made it 2-0, then
Mike Bulgia's single to left field scored
Mick Bafunno. Ward then retired Eastern 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to earn the complete-game shutout.
Inside the Numbers
- Ward moved to 2-1 on the season after tossing all seven innings. He allowed just three hits, no runs, and struck out two.
- Towers went 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI.
- Eastern's Mickey Foytik was dealt the loss after throwing 5.1 innings and allowing three earned runs with six strikeouts.

How It Happened
In game two of this afternoon's twin bill, Eastern used an eight-run second inning and took advantage of some LVC miscues to power itself past the Dutchmen 13-3. The Eagles now sit at 1-5, 1-1 MACC, while LVC moved to 6-4, 5-1 MACC.
In the top of the second innings, the Eagles sent 12 men to the plate and scored eight runs, as the Dutchmen committed a pair of errors in the frame that cost them. The Eagles later made it a 10-0 score in the top of the fourth, however LVC got both of those runs back in the bottom of the frame thanks to Smith's RBI-triple and Nico Santor's RBI-single, but the Dutchmen still found themselves down 10-2 going into the fifth.
In the top of the fifth, the Eagles plated three more, but in the bottom of the fifth,
Bryan Mowery hit a pinch-hit solo home run to left field for his first-career long ball, but Eastern's lead was too large and the Dutchmen eventually fell 13-3.
Inside the Numbers
- Nine different Dutchmen recorded one hit in game two.
- Offensively, the Eagles were led by Liam Clarke, who went 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and four runs scored.
- Eastern's Brad Clemes added three hits and five RBI, three coming off a three-run homer in the second inning.
- Tyler Bennett earned the win for the Eagles on the mound after tossing four innings and allowing two earned runs with two strikeouts.

Conference action continues for LVC this weekend in a four-game series with Messiah. The Dutchmen host the Falcons on Saturday in a doubleheader before making the short trip to Grantham on Sunday for another twin bill.
