How It Happened
HERSHEY, Pa. – Elmira netted two first-period goals en route to a 4-2 win over Lebanon Valley on Sunday afternoon in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Men's Ice Hockey action. The Flying Dutchmen fell to 2-1-1, 2-1-1 UCHC, while the Soaring Eagles improved to 3-2-1, 1-1-1 UCHC.
Â
Elmira was the first to light the lamp just 4:54 into the first period when Ryan Reifler tipped a shot from the point that found the back of the net for the early 1-0 advantage. Just under five minutes later, Jake Russo scored to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors. For the remainder of the period, the Soaring Eagles' goaltending and defense kept LVC's offense as bay, as the Dutchmen were only able to muster three shots in a scoreless opening period.
Â
At the 6:56 mark of the second period, Elmira's Janis Vizbelis made it 3-0, but later, the Soaring Eagles were whistled for a five-minute major and a game misconduct, giving the Dutchmen a five-minute power play. With 35 seconds to go in the middle period,
Alex Borowiec got the Dutchmen on the board after deflecting
Darion Benchich's shot into the back of the net, giving LVC life heading into the third period.
Â
In the third period, the Soaring Eagles' Nicholas Domitrovic made it 4-1 in favor of Elmira, but just 17 seconds later,
Tyler Romel's shot from the point had eyes and found the back of the net to make it a 4-2 score. LVC pulled goaltender
Henry Burns late, but were unable to set up anything in Elmira's zone and fell 4-2.
