How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley women's basketball team saw another big second half from Widener be too much to overcome as the Dutchmen dropped their second in a row to the pride in a defensive struggle, 57-48, on Friday night. LVC falls to 2-4 on the year while Widener remains perfect at 6-0.
The Dutchmen were strong early, holding Widener scoreless for the first 4:58 of the contest while building up an 8-0 lead of their own over that stretch. Widener would find their stride offensively in the second half of the opening frame, ending the quarter on a 12-5 run to pull within just one at the end of the quarter, LVC holding a slim 13-12 lead.
Widener would go on to score the first five points of the second quarter to grab their first lead of the game. LVC was not phased though as a pair of three-pointers from
Sofia Bowers and
Emily Mealey down the stretch of the quarter would pull the Dutchmen back ahead and the teams went into intermission with LVC holding on to a 24-23 lead.
The Widener offense would get going in the third, scoring 21 of their 57 points for the game in the third quarter. The Pride would shoot nearly 50% from the floor and knock down three triples in the process. Gianna Samuels would take over with all three of the three-balls in the quarter and LVC would trail 44-39 headed into the fourth.
Again, Widener was strong to open the period, this time opening up a double-digit lead before LVC would respond with their first points. With LVC trailing 51-44, the Dutchmen would have a few opportunities to pull closer, but were unable to capitalize at the free throw line, shooting 1-for-6 from the charity stripe over a 1:28 span, and causing the Dutchmen to not close the gap as Widener would hold on for the nine-point win.
