HERSHEY, Pa. - In Lebanon Valley Women's Ice Hockey's 2021 opener, the Flying Dutchmen tied Neumann University 4-4, however the Knights were victorious in the shootout by a 2-1 margin to pick up the extra United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) point. Each team now sits at 0-0-1.
Â
Down by two at 4-2 with just six and a half minutes left in regulation, LVC began its impeccable comeback when
Taylor Brynteson found the back of the net off assists from
Katie Pounder and
Grace Mayer. The Dutchmen, who showed incredible fight in their season-opener, then tied the game with 45 seconds remaining after
Chloe Glass dished a pass to
Victoria Scurto who buried it top shelf for her first collegiate goal, the all-important tally that evened the game at 4-4 and eventually sent it into overtime.
Â
The 3-v-3 extra period featured loads of open ice and plentiful scoring chances. Just 24 seconds in,
Abby Radcliffe let off a shot, but Alexa Lamplugh was there for the save. Later,
Shelby Guinard made a big pad stop on Kyleigh Prance to keep the game knotted at 4-4. In the final two minutes of the five-minute overtime, LVC peppered Neumann with several shots, including two from Glass, but Lamplugh stopped both, sending the game into a shootout.
Â
The first four shooters were each stopped by the respective goaltenders, but Claudio Trionfo finally broke through with a goal. Next up was LVC's Radcliffe, and she answered with a tally of her own to even the shootout at 1-1. In the sudden death phase of the shootout, Syd Ladwig scored and
Olivia Cindrich was stopped, giving the Knights the 2-1 shootout win.
Â
In the early going, it was the visitors who struck first when Katelyn Brown intercepted a feed at the near the blue line and scored on a breakaway for the 1-0 lead 6:19 into the game. Later in the first, with 1:52 remaining, Brown netted her second of the game, giving Neumann a 2-0 advantage, and with just 12 seconds to go in the first, Jeannie Padden scored a power-play goal, giving the Knights a 3-0 lead after one period.
Â
Not much scoring occurred in the second period but the final two minutes made up for it. Cindrich scored on the power play for LVC off an assist from
Emma Dorf with two minutes left, and just 39 seconds later, Cindrich netted her second of the game off an assist from Radcliffe, bringing the home team to within one at 3-2 heading into the third.
