ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Men's Soccer team held on to top Alvernia 2-1 in the MAC Commonwealth semifinals in a physical bout on Wednesday afternoon. The Dutchmen advance to their first MAC Commonwealth title match since 2016. LVC also defeated Alvernia in the semifinals that year.
How It Happened
- In the early going, it was the Golden Wolves who were putting the pressure on the Dutchmen defense as a majority of play in the first third of the opening half was played in the LVC defensive half. The Dutchmen were able to withstand the early pressure from Alvernia and would turn the tables on a counter attack. Lucas Strange took the ball up the right wing and would find Anderson Velozwong who would continue working the ball towards the middle to Aaron Weitzel who would smack a one-time shot in to the lower-left corner to put LVC ahead in the 24th minute.
- Just eight minutes later, LVC would continue to put pressure on the Alvernia backline with constant pressure and would break free again as Zach Snider gathered a loose ball in the box and was able to will the ball into the net amongst a host of Alvernia defenders to double the Dutchmen lead. LVC would take their 2-0 advantage into halftime.
- The Golden Wolves would come out in the second half and grab an early goal to make things interesting. Ryan Cogill would center a ball from the right wing and find Ryan Kuster who was able find the back of the net and cut the Dutchmen lead in half.
- Alvernia had a lot of dangerous chances throughout the second half but Sean Quirk made a number of acrobatic and clutch saves to keep Alvernia from recording the equalizing goal as LVC advances to the conference championship match with the 2-1 victory.
Inside The Numbers
- Aaron Weitzel netted his sixth goal of the season, good for second on the team.
- Zach Snider tallied his second score on the year.
- Anderson Velozwong added his co-team leading fifth assist on the season while Lucas Strange recorded his first helper on the year.
- Sean Quirk was excellent in net for LVC and made 13 saves in net.
- Both teams fired off a ton of shots with the Dutchmen holding a 22-20 edge in that category. Alvernia however put 14 shots on target compared to LVC's 10.
- The two teams combined for 34 fouls with 22 coming in the second half. There were also four yellow cards and a red card in the physical match.
