Lebanon Valley 3, Alvernia 2 (27-25, 20-25, 25-14, 26-28, 15-6)
ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley Volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a thrilling five-set victory over Alvernia on Tuesday evening. The Dutchmen improve to 10-9, 3-4 MACC while the Golden Wolves fall to 9-14, 1-6 MACC.
Prior to the contest, LVC honored their two seniors,
Reily Shelly and
Mikiah Sangrey.
How It Happened
- In the opening set, LVC opened up an early lead but the Golden Wolves would battle back and the teams were tied at 14 at the midway point of the set. Alvernia would win eight of the next 11 points and had LVC on the ropes 22-17. The Dutchmen responded with a big run of their own by winning 10 of the final 13 points to take the opening set 27-25.
- The second set was controlled by Alvernia as they jumped out to an early four-point lead and never relinquished it as they would tie the match up with a 25-20 second set win.
- The third set was close in the early going with Alvernia holding a slim 9-8 lead. The Dutchmen would go on to rattle off five straight points and nine of the next 12 to grab a comfortable 17-12 advantage. With the Dutchmen leading 17-14, LVC would end the set with eight straight points to take the set 25-14 and hold a 2-1 overall lead.
- With their backs against the wall, Alvernia came out swinging in the fourth set and opened up an 11-3 lead. Following a timeout, the Dutchmen would battle back and end up bringing the game back level 14-14. Alvernia would end up edging LVC in a tiebreak with a 28-26 win to force the decisive fifth set.
- The Dutchmen dominated the fifth set and cruised to a 15-6 win capped by the final five points of the match to top Alvernia 3-2.
Inside The Numbers
- Mikiah Sangrey led the Dutchmen with a career-high 25 kills. Reily Shelly also posted a season-best 22 kills.
- Ali Whitworth posted a career-high 50 assists.
- Alvernia's Rachel Sipling led all players with 26 kills.
- Kasey Thomas led all players with 27 digs. Sangrey also chipped in with 16 digs.
- Robyn Stepler recorded a career-high six service aces.
- The Dutchmen finished with a .278 attack percentage compared to Alvernia's .233.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen will take on Eastern University on Thursday in their MAC Commonwealth finale. Game time in St. David's, Pa. is set for 7 p.m.
