W. Hoops' Rally Comes Up Just Short

How It Happened
READING, Pa. – A furious Dutchmen comeback effort came up just short as the LVC women's basketball team fell 78-73 in overtime to Alvernia on Saturday afternoon. After an Emily Mealey triple with nine second left in regulation, Alvernia would pick up the win over the Dutchmen in the extra period as LVC drops to 7-12, 2-8 MACC while Alvernia improves to 7-11, 3-8 MACC.
 
Picking up the action at the start of the second half, LVC trailed by six to start the third quarter and the teams would trade buckets throughout the period as the Dutchmen finished the third period still trailing by six, 50-44.
 
After a quick 3-pointer by Gabriella De Vito for Alvernia to push the lead to nine, LVC would rattle of nine straight points of their own capped by a 3-point play the old-fashioned way by Jaime Youngkin to bring the game tied at 53 apiece. The Dutchmen would continue their run as they ended up flipping the script and led Alvernia by seven points with 4:01 left in regulation. Alvernia would chip away at the lead and eventually took a 65-62 lead with just 21 seconds to go. On the ensuing Duthcmen possession, Emily Mealy would knock down a 3-pointer to tie the game up with just nine ticks to play and eventually send the game into overtime.
 
In the extra period, Alvernia opened up with three consecutive 3-pointers to take a controlling 74-68 advantage around the midway point of overtime. The Dutchmen would cut the deficit to one but could not grab the lead again as Alvernia would knock down their free throws down the stretch to finish off the Dutchmen 78-73.
 
In the opening half, the Dutchmen held a five-point lead after the first quarter which was answered by Alvernia who outscored the Dutchmen 21-10 in the second period to take a six-point halftime lead into the locker room. The Dutchmen went just 3-12 from the field in that second period while Alvernia was hot from the floor shooting 50% from the floor including three 3-point field goals.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Emily Mealey led the Dutchmen with a 22 points and 14 rebounds, including the game-tying 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.
  • Three other Dutchmen finished in double figures. Morgan Bamberger knocked down four triples en route to 19 points and seven boards.
  • Daelyn Stabler had a complete game with 14 points, a career-high seven assists, and five rebounds.
  • Jaime Youngkin also chipped in with 11 points and seven boards.
  • Alvernia was led by Cathryn Kramer who poured in 20 points and added 13 rebounds off the bench. Gabriella De Vito and Dee McCormick each pitched in with 18 points and knocked down nine 3-pointers between the two of them.
  • LVC held a slight advantage on the glass, outrebounding Alvernia 49-44.
  • The Dutchmen turned the ball over 23 times compared to Alvernia's 11.
  • Alvernia hit 10 3-point field goals while LVC knocked down six.

 
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen return home as they continue their conference schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 5, when they host Lycoming College. Tipoff in Sorrentino Gymnasium is set for 8 p.m.
