How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – A big third quarter from Widener put the Dutchmen women's basketball team in too big of a hole to climb out of in the fourth as LVC fell to the Pride 72-51 on Wednesday evening. Widener outscored LVC 20-8 to push a slim three-point halftime lead to 15 points and put the game out of reach.
The first quarter was a struggle for LVC on the offensive end as they picked up their first points just after the midway point of the quarter after Widener had already poured in 11 points. Widener would hold a 21-9 advantage after the first quarter.
The Dutchmen would bounce back nicely in the second quarter, outscoring Widener 21-12 in the frame that eventually cut the deficit to just three at 33-30 at the intermission. LVC trailed 24-9 early in the period before going on a 13-0 run that included back-to-back 3-pointers by
Morgan Bamberger and
Emily Mealey and the Dutchmen found themselves down just a pair with 4:58 to play in the opening half. The teams would trade buckets for the rest of the quarter and a late
Jaime Youngkin layup with five second to go would cut the halftime deficit to just three points.
Widener would take control of the game in their big third quarter as they outscored the Dutchmen 20-8 in the period. LVC trailed by four, 38-34, with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter before the Pride would rattle off 13 straight points over the next five minutes before LVC was able to stop the run. Widener would get a late layup by Devan Rimmer to push the lead back to 15 points with just one quarter to play.
The Dutchmen would be unable to get back within striking distance in the fourth quarter as Widener topped LVC 72-51.
Inside the Numbers
- Jaime Youngkin set a new career-high with 17 points to go along with 11 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
- Morgan Bamberger finished with 13 points while knocking down a trio of 3-pointers.
- Emily Mealey recorded another double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.
- The Pride had four finish in double figures led by Devan Rimmer who poured in 16 points.
- Widener shot 50.8% from the floor for the game while the Dutchmen finished shooting 38.6%.
- The Pride held a slight advantage on the boards, 38-33.
- In Widener's big second half, they shot 17-29 from the field and were 4-6 from beyond the arc.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen are back on the hardwood this weekend when they take the trip to Reading, Pa. to take on Alvernia University. Tipoff this Saturday afternoon is scheduled for 1 p.m.
