How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley women's basketball team fell to Messiah College, 80-48, on Wednesday evening. The Falcons used a big second half to pull away from the Dutchmen as LVC falls to 2-6 in league play while Messiah improves to 7-1 with the win.
The first half was played fairly equal with LVC answering any scoring runs the Falcons made in the opening 20 minutes. The Dutchmen led 11-10 late in the first period after a
Sara White free throw but Messiah would get a pair of buckets by Leah Springer in the final 42 seconds to take a 14-11 lead into the second quarter.
The Falcons opened the second quarter with a quick 8-0 run that was answered by LVC who rattled off six consecutive points of their own to pull back within five. Messiah led by nine points late following a 3-pointer from Eleana Eckley but the Dutchmen would answer again with a 3-pointer of their own off the hand of
Morgan Bamberger. Eckley would hit a layup with nine ticks left as Messiah held a 36-28 halftime advantage over the Dutchmen.
Messiah would control the second half from the jump as they outscored the Dutchmen 44-20 in the second half to pull away from LVC. Messiah shot 54.3% from the floor in the second half while LVC struggled on the offensive end only shooting 32% to go with 12 turnovers as Messiah would close out the Dutchmen late.
Inside the Numbers
- Jaime Youngkin recorded her fifth double-double on a career-high 16 points and 11 rebounds. This was Youngkin's third double-double in the last five games.
- Emily Mealey continued her run of double-doubles with 13 points and 11 boards.
- Messiah was led by Leah Springer who finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds as well as Eleana Eckley who recorded 22 points while shooting 5-8 from 3-point range.
- Messiah shot just under 50% from the floor for the game at 49.3% while LVC shot 38.5% for the game.
- Turnovers were a killer for the Dutchmen as they turned it over 22 times that resulted in 29 Messiah points. The Falcons only committed eight turnovers for the game.
- The Dutchmen bench outscored Messiah 12-9.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen will have the weekend off before hosting the Widener University Pride next Wednesday evening. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. in Sorrentino Gymnasium on Jan. 29.
