How It Happened
ASTON, Pa. – Lebanon Valley picked up a split on the day at the Neumann tri-match with a tough five-set victory over Rowan University to start the day but fell in straight sets to host Neumann to end the day. LVC now sits at 10-8 overall on the season.
In the first set, both teams would trade blows throughout with neither team able to grow a comfortable lead. LVC went on a 6-0 run midway through the first set to grab a 17-14 lead. Rowan would then score three straight points to tie the set up 17-17. The set would go back and forth the remainder of the way by a kill by
Mikiah Sangrey and a service ace from
Kaitlyn Reed would clinch the first set the Dutchmen.
The second set was more of the same with each team staying within a few points of the other. Rowan opened up a 4-0 lead out of the gate but LVC respond with five unanswered points of their own to grab their first lead of the set. The Dutchmen trailed 20-19 late in the set but won six of the final eight points, ending on a
Jayna Class kill, to take a two-set advantage over the Profs.
In set number three, LVC led 10-7 before going on a 6-0 run that included a pair of aces by Reed and three kills from
Amanda Sides to put the Dutchmen up nine. The Profs would work their way back into the set going on a 15-4 run to eventually retake the lead 22-21 late in the set. Rowan would continue their run as they close the set out on a combined 18-6 run to take the third set 25-22. The fourth set was all Rowan as they opened up a large lead and never looked back as the Profs cruised to a 25-13 set win and forced a decisive fifth set.
The fifth set started with a 7-2 run by the Dutchmen to take an early advantage. Rowan would then score four straight points followed by three in a row by LVC to keep the Dutchmen with a comfortable lead. Kills by Sides and Class would clinch the 15-12 set win as the Dutchmen would hold on to win the match three sets to two.
Class led the Dutchmen offensively with 15 kills followed by
Reily Shelly with 13 and Sides who recorded 12.
Emily Bartlett led LVC with 42 assists in the win. Reed picked up five service aces and
Alice Thorsen and Shelly each recorded four. Reed also led the Dutchmen with 14 digs.
In the Dutchmen's second match of the afternoon, LVC was swept in straight sets by Neumann (25-21, 25-19, 26-24).
The Dutchmen were close with the Knights throughout the first set but the Knights would grab a small advantage and never relinquish it late winning three of the last five points to seal the set win. In the second set, both teams were battling closely but another Knights' run late, this time a 13-6 run would result in a 25-19 set two win as Neumann had grabbed a firm hold of the match.
The third set went back and forth as the Dutchmen had their backs against the wall to try to force a fourth set. LVC led 24-23 late but Neumann won three straight points to end the set and end up sweeping the match in straight sets as the Dutchmen had to settle for a split on the day.
Reily Shelly led LVC offensively with 10 kills.
Amanda Sides recorded eight kills while
Jayna Class picked up six on the day.
Kaitlyn Reed led the team with three service aces.
Emily Bartlett picked up 27 assists and seven digs.
Alice Thorsen led the Dutchmen defensively with 14 digs.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen are back in action next Saturday when they host a tri-match with Cabrini University and Bethany College. LVC will take on Cabrini at 10 a.m. followed by matchup with Bethany at 2 p.m. at Sorrentino Gymnasium.
