Lebanon Valley def. Grove City 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 28-30, 25-21)
How It Happened
ALFRED, N.Y. – Lebanon Valley picked up a pair of victories on day two of the Alfred University tournament as the Dutchmen topped Grove City in four sets before sweeping host Alfred in the final match of the weekend. The Dutchmen were winners of the tournament after going 3-1 for the weekend.
The first set against Grove City was close throughout but the Dutchmen closed the set nicely winning four of the last six points to take the win 25-17. The second set was more of the same as both sides were within just a couple points for majority of the set. LVC led 15-13 in the second frame before ending the set on a 10-5 run, finishing with a
Kaitlyn Reed ace to take a two set lead.
The Wolverines would battle back in the third set to force a fourth set. Grove City was trailing 18-13 but would respond winning nine straight points to retake the lead. The set would be within one point for the entire set after it was 22-21 in favor of the Wolverines. Grove City would eventually take the set 30-28. In the fourth set, it was hotly-contested all the way to the end. The Dutchmen trailed 20-19 late in the set but would win six of the final eight points to secure the 25-21 set win and the victory in the match in four sets.
Jayna Class led the way on the offensive side for LVC with 17 kills followed by
Reily Shelly with 12 and
Grace Powell with 10 kills.
Emily Bartlett led the Dutchmen with 47 assists.
Kaitlyn Reed was the leader in digs with 20 followed by
Alice Thorsen who recorded 18 and
Julia Rill who picked up 14.
In the Dutchmen's second match of the afternoon, LVC swept Alfred University (25-18, 25-12, 25-14).
LVC and Alfred played a tightly-contested first set as the set went back and forth for a majority of the time. The score was tied 17-17 before the Dutchmen would win seven consecutive points to lead 24-17. Shelly picked up a pair of kills during that stretch. LVC would win on a service error to take the first set 25-18.
The second set was all Dutchmen as LVC went on a huge run midway through the set. LVC led 9-5 before the Dutchmen would win 14 of the next 17 points to take a 23-8 lead and total control of the set. A kill from Rill would finish off the Saxons in set two by a 25-12 score. In the third set, the Dutchmen again went on a run around the halfway point of the set. The score was tied at 10 before the Dutchmen went on a 10-1 run and led 20-11 with complete control of the set. Shelly would pick up a kill to win the set 25-14 and the match in straight sets for the Dutchmen.
Shelly led the Dutchmen offensively with 10 kills. Rill and Class each added nine kills. Rill picked up 11 assists as well while Class tallied a pair of service aces. Reed and Bartlett each recorded three service aces. Bartlett led the team with 28 assists in the win. Reed also tallied a team-high 12 digs.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen will continue conference play when they travel to Owings Mills, Md. to take on the Stevenson Mustangs on Wednesday. Game time scheduled for 7 p.m.
