How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's men's soccer team had their comeback attempt come up short as they fell 5-3 to the Eastern Mennonite University Royals on a hot Saturday afternoon at Herbert Field. The Dutchmen fell to 2-4-1 on the year while the Royals improved to 4-5 with the win.
Both teams managed to create solid offensive chances in the first 20 minutes of action but neither could find the back of the net. The Royals would finally start the scoring at the 22:25 mark of the first half off the foot of Troy Davis. Davis gathered a failed clear attempt by LVC and volleyed the ball off one bounce into the back of the net to give EMU the lead. Just 53 seconds later, Andy Chappell-Decker for the Royals would double the lead after receiving a through ball from Gabe Nafziger and the Dutchmen quickly found themselves down a pair of goals.
In the 31st minute, the Royals would tack on another goal, this time from Caleb Oakes, to extend their lead to three. The Dtuchmen would fire off 10 shots in the half but could not find the back of the net and trailed EMU 3-0 at halftime.
It was the Royals again finding the back of the net in the 58th minute to push their lead out to four. Carlos Flores-Melgar received a Chappell-Decker pass on the left wing and placed the ball into the right corner for the goal. The Dutchmen would get on the board at the 64:21 mark on a volley from
Zach Snider. Just over four minutes later,
Peter Foerster capitalized on a penalty kick awarded after
Ivan Jorel was taken down hard in the box, and the Dutchmen pulled within two.
The Royals would keep LVC at bay with another score at the 79:01 mark. Nafziger was on the receiving end of a through ball by Kyle Shelton and Nafziger chipped it into the goal and the lead was back up to three. The Dutchmen would continue to fight as
Lucas Strange headed home a short cross from
Anderson Velozwong to bring LVC back within a pair with six minutes to play. LVC would fire of 22 shots in the second half but only managed three goals and could not overcome the halftime deficit as they fell 5-3 to the Royals.
