SUNY Potsdam def. Lebanon Valley 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 15-7)
How It Happened
ALFRED, N.Y. – Lebanon Valley salvaged a split on day one of the Alfred University tournament on Friday evening. The Dutchmen dropped the opener in a tough five-set match to SUNY Potsdam but bounced back nicely to make quick work of Hilbert College in a sweep in the nightcap.
The first two sets against Potsdam were tightly contested throughout with both teams picking up set victories by a 25-23 score. LVC took the first set before Potsdam answered in the second set. In the third set, the score was 12-11 LVC before the Dutchmen would separate themselves going on a 9-2 run to take control at 21-13. The Dutchmen would take set three 25-20. Once again Potsdam answered and took the fourth set 25-17 to force a decisive fifth frame.
In the fifth set, Potsdam ran out to a quick 8-4 lead and never let the set get back within less than three points and took the final set 15-7 to down the Dutchmen in the opener.
Reily Shelly led the way offensively with 10 kills and three service aces for the Dutchmen.
Grace Powell and
Jayna Class each added nine kills apiece.
Mikiah Sangrey led LVC with 29 assists and 14 digs.
Kaitlyn Reed and
Alice Thorsen pitched in with 13 and 12 digs respectively.
In the Dutchmen's second match of the evening, LVC swept Hilbert College (25-6, 25-10, 25-17).
LVC made quick work of Hilbert in the first set as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back. The Dutchmen took the first set 25-6, the biggest margin of victory for LVC in a set this season. The second set was more of the same as the Dutchmen ran out to an 8-0 advantage that included three aces from
Emily Bartlett. The Dutchmen would cruise to a 25-10 set win and were on the verge of a sweep. In the third set, Hilbert led 10-9 before LVC would turn it on to finish the set on a 16-7 run to complete the three-set sweep of Hilbert.
Powell and Class led LVC with five kills apiece.
Emily Bartlett set a new career-high with seven service aces in the win. Shelly and Class each added three aces. Bartlett also paced the Dutchmen with 22 assists.
Antoinette Cantarella led LVC with eight digs and two blocks.
Rachelle Filer also added two blocks in the win.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen will continue their play at the Alfred University tournament with a pair of matches tomorrow afternoon. LVC will take on Grove City top open the day at 1 p.m. followed by a matchup with host Alfred University at 3 p.m.
