How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's volleyball team made quick work of Alvernia to pick up their first conference victory with a sweep of the Golden Wolves on Tuesday night.
The Dutchmen came out of the gates hot as they built an early lead quickly against Alvernia in the opening set. LVC found themselves ahead 4-3 before going on 14-4 run to take complete control of the set as they led 18-7. The Dutchmen collected four service aces during the run, two by
Emily Bartlett, and one by
Reily Shelly and
Julia Rill apiece. Down the stretch,
Jayna Class asserted herself offensively as she recorded four kills in the final six points for LVC as they took the first set 25-12.
In the second set, Alvernia jumped ahead to a 5-3 advantage before the Dutchmen would score seven straight points to double up the Golden Wolves, 10-5. The Dutchmen would never relinquish their lead in the set as they cruised to a 25-19 set win.
The final set was dominated by LVC. After Alvernia scored the first point of the set, LVC would score 11 consecutive points and led 11-1 with the victory in sight. The Dutchmen would continue to cruise through the set and a
Carli Sholl kill would end the set at 25-12 and the match with three set to none for LVC's first conference win of the season.
The Dutchmen posted a .260 hitting percentage and 14 service aces, both second most in a single match this year. Class led the way offensively with 12 kills, followed by Shelly who recorded seven kills. Bartlett and
Kaitlyn Reed each tallied four service aces.
Mikiah Sangrey picked up 25 assists in the win. Rill led the Dutchmen with eight digs, followed by Reed and
Alice Thorsen with six apiece.
Also, announced yesterday evening,
Jayna Class was named as the MVP of this past weekend's quad tournament up at Wells College.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen will head out to Alfred, New York to participate in the Alfred University tournament this weekend. LVC will take on SUNY Potsdam and then Hilbert College on Friday night at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively. They will wrap up the weekend Saturday afternoon when they take on Grove City at 1 p.m. and then host Alfred University at 3 p.m.
