How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – No. 11 Franklin & Marshall scored the game-winner with 26 remaining in the fourth quarter to escape Arnold Field with a narrow 3-2 win over Lebanon Valley on Wednesday night in non-conference field hockey action. The Dutchmen slipped to 0-4, while the Diplomats moved to 3-0.
With just over six minutes to go in the fourth quarter and LVC down by one,
Taylor Pentz found space inside the box and ripped a shot, but it was saved by F&M's goalkeeper. Seconds later,
Cecile Kat corralled the rebound and snuck her shot past the diving Christina Leery to even the game late at 2-2.
Later, with just 31 seconds to go, the Diplomats were awarded a penalty corner, taken by Addie Peters. Peters paced it to Melissa Gula, who then fed Erin Coverdale, who let off a hard shot that found the back of the net to give the visitors their advantage back at 3-2. F&M managed to run the next 26 seconds off the clock to come away with the slimmest of victories.
In the opening two quarters, the Dutchmen's defense stood tall and despite allowing nine penalty corners, they held one of the nation's top offenses in check. A huge moment in the contest came at 19:47 of the second when the Diplomats were awarded a penalty stroke. Kat Horsley lifted her shot, but
Nikki Willi stuck her pad out to her left and stopped it, keeping the game scoreless heading into halftime.
Just 26 seconds into the third quarter, F&M broke the 0-0 game when Coverdale netted her first of the game after Lily Mynott ran down the left side and fed Coverdale in the middle. 2:34 later, Mynott scored her fourth of the season to put the Dips ahead 2-0, but with just two ticks left on the clock in the third, LVC came to within a goal when
Abbie Keath netted her first-career goal off a rebound that came right to her.
