How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season in a shootout with Grove City by a score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Herbert Field. The Dutchmen improved to 1-1 while the Wolverines, who are fresh off an NCAA Second-Round appearance in 2018, fell to 0-2 on the young season.
The Dutchmen got on the board first in the 18th minute on a beautiful strike from
Bridgett Finn. Finn, who received a pass just outside the 18-yard box from
Maya Cohen, spun to the middle and blasted a left-footed shot off the crossbar and down into the back of the net as LVC jumped out to the early lead.
LVC was not finished their scoring in the first half as they knocked in a pair of goals within two minutes and 16 seconds of each other. The first goal was a blast from
Lucy McGloshen from the left side of the box on a sharp angle that found its way into the right corner as the Dutchmen doubled their lead to 2-0. A few minutes later, Finn would volley a well-placed cross from
Kaeleigh Smedley into the back of the net for Finn's second goal and LVC's third of the half. The Dutchmen took the 3-0 advantage into halftime.
The Wolverines would find their stride offensively early in the second half as Shannon Brawley scored twice in a four minute and 15 second span, both volleys off of crosses from the right wing and the Dutchmen's lead was trimmed to just one with 35 minutes remaining in regulation. In the 79th minute, Grove City would get their equalizer on a perfectly placed shot from 35 yards out by Michaela Burke to bring the game back even, 3-3.
Just under five minutes later, the Dutchmen would grab the lead back.
Jessica Lingenfelter received the ball after a failed clear by the Wolverine defense and would place the ball into the right corner of the goal to put LVC back ahead 4-3 with just under seven minutes remaining. LVC's defense would hold strong and secure their first victory of the season.
