How It Happened
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lynchburg's Alexis Brown netted the eventual game-winner on a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter to lift the Hornets past Lebanon Valley by a 2-1 score in each squad's 2019 opener on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen fell to 0-1 and Lynchburg jumped to 1-0.
Early on in the fourth quarter, the home team was awarded a penalty stroke and Alexis Brown barely snuck one past
Nikki Willi to give the Hornets a 2-1 advantage. Soon after,
Cecile Kat had a chance to even the game, but her shot sailed just wide. In the closing minutes, the Dutchmen were awarded two penalty corners, and on the first one,
Danielle Alba ripped a shot, but Laurel Nicks was there for the save and Lynchburg was able to hold on for the narrow victory.
Just over three minutes into this afternoon's game, the Hornets' Kaylie Truitt got her team on the board with a score, but then, with just 31 seconds left in the second quarter,
Ashlee Sheibley evened the game for the Dutchmen with her first-career tally in her first game wearing a Dutchmen uniform from Alba and LVC went into the second half tied at 1-1.
Willi made some key stops in the second half to keep the game scoreless, however Lynchburg's penalty stroke proved to be the difference in the end.
