How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's men's soccer team dropped its home opener to No. 17 Franklin & Marshall by a 2-1 score in overtime at Herbert Field on Friday afternoon. The Flying Dutchmen fell to 0-1, while the Diplomats improve to 1-0.
Neither team could find much space on the offensive end in the early portion of the opening half with just seven shots total in the first 28 minutes. At the 28:45 mark, LVC was just inches from a goal but a sprawling Diplomat defender kicked the ball out of bounds just before the ball crossed the goal line keeping the game scoreless. The teams would go into intermission deadlocked at zero.
At the 58:57 mark of the second half, the Dutchmen earned a free kick from the right side of the field from about 20 yards out.
Kurtis Rineer would step up and drill the set piece into the left corner of the goal to put LVC up 1-0. Just under ten minutes later, the Diplomats would answer on a free kick of their own. Jack Brandt took the set piece from about 40 yards out near the left sideline and put a dangerous ball in front of the goal at the six-yard box that found the head of A.J. Kopacz who flicked the ball with his head into the right corner to tie the score 1-1.
Both teams would have good scoring opportunities for the remainder of the half and in the 85th minute the Diplomats would go down a man due to a red card. Neither team would score after that and the game headed to extra time.
Under five minutes into extra time, F&M earned a penalty kick and Kopacz would strike again placing the ball into the left corner to give the Diplomats the 2-1 victory.
