How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. –
Jake Williams and
Tanner Rock pitched magnificently in Lebanon Valley's 4-1 victory over Stevenson in each team's MAC Commonwealth regular season finale on Sunday afternoon. The Dutchmen improved to 15-12, 7-14 MAC Commonwealth, while the Mustangs dropped to 20-20 10-11 MAC Commonwealth and fell just short of a postseason appearance.
After Williams retired Stevenson without allowing a run through the first two innings,
Nick O'Shea opened up the scoring for LVC in the bottom of the second when he ripped an RBI-double to left center that scored
Bryan Towers to make it 1-0. Williams continued to cruise on the mound, but ran into some trouble in the top of the fourth when Jordan Moore doubled home Kidwiler to even the game at 1-1. The birthday boy escaped further damage, though, and in the bottom of the fourth, O'Shea again put the Dutchmen on top with a sacrifice fly to center that scored
Joey Wrabel.
From there, Rock took over on the mound and flourished, as he allowed just two hits in four innings to go along with two strikeouts. In the bottom of the seventh, Wrabel gave Williams and Rock some breathing room when he singled to left field to score
Chris DeClerico, and then an error by Stevenson's left fielder allowed
Josh Marcelli to score to make it a 4-1 game.
Trying to dash the Mustangs' hopes of a MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament bid, Rock ran into some trouble in the bottom of the ninth when Holcomb began the inning with a single. After Rock induced a flyout for the first out, Lugo notched a pinch-hit single through the right side to put runners on first and second. Then, DeClerico came up with a huge out when he snagged a ground ball at shortstop and threw out Moore who was trying to advance to third. Rock then got Murray to ground out to seal LVC's victory.
