How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley finished off its 2019 season on a high note when
Mike Bulgia hit a two-out, walk-off double in the bottom of the 13th to lift the Flying Dutchmen over Lancaster Bible 8-7 on Tuesday afternoon at McGill Field. LVC ended its season on a two-game win streak and improved to 16-23, while the Chargers dropped to 11-18.
In the top of the 13th, the sun was falling quickly and each team knew that it would most likely be the final inning regardless of there being a run scored.
Joe DeGrazia allowed a baseball to get to second, but with two outs, he struck out Mike VanDame looking to keep the game knotted at 7-7. In the bottom of the frame,
Chris DeClerico lined a ball to left center to begin the inning, but
Josh Herring then lined into a double play after he ripped a ball right back to the pitcher who was able to double off DeClerico.
It looked as though the game was going to end in a tie, but
Ethan Baumack and Bulgia had other ideas. Baumack drew a two-out walk, and then, on a 1-2 count, Bulgia launched a ball to the left-center gap that allowed Baumack to score the game-winning run.
LBC jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead beginning with Will Welsh's RBI-single through the right side in the top of the first and Welsh later scored on a wild pitch. The Dutchmen, however, were quick to respond and in the bottom of the inning,
Josh Willey hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored
Joey Wrabel. In the bottom of the fourth with LVC still down by one,
Ethan Hurd singled home
TJ Holdredge to even the game at 2-2. In the top of the fifth, though, the Chargers went back up by one off Adam Cohick's RBI-single up the middle.
Three runs from LVC in the bottom of the sixth made it 5-3 in favor of the home team. Baumack scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, then
Evan Hartman's fielder's choice made it 4-3 and
Josh Marcelli's RBI-single to left made it 5-3. LBC didn't go away, however, and scored once in the top of the seventh to come to within a run. Baumack responded with an RBI-single to left center to put LVC back up by three at 7-4. Once again, the Chargers were able to tie the game in the top of the eighth at 7-7 thanks to three more runs. From there, neither team could string any hits together until Bulgia's heroics in the bottom of the 13th.
