How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to complete a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Messiah College on Friday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action. The Dutchmen moved to 10-9, 3-4 MAC Commonwealth, while the Falcons dropped to 5-12, 0-7 MAC Commonwealth.
Trailing 3-1 going into the bottom of the eighth, the Flying Dutchmen needed a spark and got one when
Josh Herring led off the frame with a four-pitch walk. The MAC Commonwealth's doubles leader,
Chris DeClerico, padded his stats with a double to left-center to put runners on second and third. Later,
Joey Wrabel singled through the left side to plate Herring and bring LVC to within one at 3-2. After a Messiah pitching change,
Ethan Hurd greeted C. Peiffer by ripping a huge two-run double to the left center wall to give the Dutchmen a 4-3 lead in exciting fashion.
Starting pitcher
Kyle Kingsbury battled all day and was asked to finish the Falcons in the top of the ninth. He did just that, retiring Messiah 1-2-3, including a strikeout swinging, to end the game and give LVC a huge 4-3 conference victory.
The visitors scored the game's first run in the top of the first off Ryan Hentschel's bunt single and the Dutchmen's offense was held in check for much of the game by Messiah's starter Jordan Nichols. In the top of the sixth, the Falcons added two more runs thanks to Hentschel's two-RBI single, but LVC got one back in the bottom of the seventh with
Mitch Rickabaugh's bases-loaded walk.
Inside the Numbers
-
Chris DeClerico went 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Hurd had a team-high two RBI off his clutch double in the eighth.
- Kingsbury went the distance to earn his third win of the season. He pitched all nine innings and allowed just two earned runs to go along with six strikeouts. He forced seven flyouts and nine groundouts. On the mound, he also picked off three runners, while Rickabaugh threw out a pair of players trying to steal.
