Whittier Pulls Away Late From LVC

How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Whittier College netted five fourth-quarter goals to pull away from and eventually defeat Lebanon Valley 14-9 on Monday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action. The Dutchmen slipped to 2-5, while the Poets improved to 7-1.
 
Whittier (Los Angeles, Calif.) netted this afternoon's first goal at 13:39 of the first, but Josh Croyle answered at 6:45 with his 13th of the season off an assist from Joe Olives. The Poets' Sergei Jacobs found the back of the net at 3:53, putting the visitors ahead by one, but Croyle scored a man-up goal with 1:36 remaining in the first to even the score at 2-2 heading into the second quarter.
 
The Poets took a narrow 3-2 advantage with a tally less than a minute into the second and their defense was able to hold LVC off the scoreboard for the quarter's entirety. The away squad added two more goals in the period and took a 5-2 lead into halftime.
 
In the middle stages of the third, Whittier added three goals in the span of 29 seconds to go up 8-3. Olives netted his ninth goal of the score off an assist from Max Warmingham, but the Poets' Nate Heritage scored with 4:03 left in the third to put the Poets back up by five at 9-4. With just over two minutes left in the third, Matt Torrence netted his 14th goal of the year, bringing the Dutchmen to within striking distance at 9-5 going into the fourth.
 
Kevin Beaver struck at the 10:50 mark of the fourth to make it a 9-6 score, but three consecutive goals by Whittier ended up to be the difference. Later in the fourth, Evan Federowicz scored his first goal of the season, but the Dutchmen were still down by five at 13-8 and the Poets eventually hung on for the 14-9 win.
 
Inside the Numbers
 - Crawford, Beaver, and Croyle finished with two goals apiece.
 - Olives recorded three points (one goal, two assists) and added three ground balls.
 - Torrence ended with a goal and an assist to go along with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
 - Cam Epple made 13 saves in net for the Dutchmen.
 - Luke Tamberino scooped up four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
 - Zack Kime caused a team-high four turnovers for LVC on defense.
 - Whittier's Nate Heritage paced his team's offense with four goals, while Sergei Jacobs added three goals and a pair of assists.
 - LVC outshot the Poets 35-33, but Whittier held a 27-15 shots on goal advantage.
 - The visitors led in total ground balls at 45-34.

LVC's three-game homestand concludes this Wednesday when Bryn Athyn pays a visit to Annville for a 7 p.m. game.
