Ward, Kingsbury Dominate in LVC’s Sweep of Albright

How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – In game one of this afternoon's doubleheader, Brendan Ward shined on the mound and timely hitting gave LVC a 7-1 victory over Albright in the Flying Dutchmen's 2019 home opener.
 
Nick O'Shea got LVC on the board in the bottom of the second with a double to right-center that scored Josh Herring and TJ Holdredge. Then, in the bottom of the third, the Dutchmen added to their lead with Holdredge's single to right field that plated Joey Wrabel, followed by Josh Herring's sacrifice fly. To cap off an impressive inning, Holdredge scored on a passed ball to push LVC's advantage to 5-0.
 
Albright got one back by scoring an unearned run in the top of the fourth, but the Dutchmen struck back when Chris DeClerico was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by Josh Marcelli's sacrifice fly and LVC later hung on for the 7-1 win.
 
Inside the Numbers
 - Ward improved to 3-0 on the season after tossing six innings without allowing an earned run. He struck out five and walked just one. Ward has yet to allow an earned run so far this season in 15 innings pitched.
 - Ryan Showalter pitched a perfect seventh inning to shut the door.
 - Holdredge went 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI.
 - O'Shea was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
 - LVC outhit the Lions 7-6.

How It Happened
In game two of the twinbill, LVC once again got great pitching as Kyle Kingsbury escaped a few jams and allowed just one run in the Dutchmen's 5-1 win to give LVC the sweep. After today's two wins, the Dutchmen improved to 9-2, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth and Albright fell to 1-6, 0-2 MAC Commonwealth.
 
LVC struck early in game two when Marcelli reached on a fielder's choice and Bryan Towers scored on a throwing error to make it 1-0, and then, in the bottom of the second, on the first pitch Luke Blair saw, the freshman launched a ball over the right-center wall for a two-run homerun to increase the Dutchmen's lead to 3-0.
 
In the top of the third, the Lions got a run back with a double to left field, but Kingsbury escaped further damage and LVC stayed ahead at 3-1. Holdrege gave Kingsbury some insurance in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI-single to right, and Blair later hit a sacrifice fly to right field to up the home team's advantage to 5-1. Kingsbury pitched five innings, and Bryce Eberly and Tanner Rock tossed the sixth and seventh, respectively, and held the Lions off the scoreboard en route to LVC's 5-1 win.
 
Inside the Numbers
 - Kingsbury improved to 2-1 after striking out five in five innings of work and allowing just one run.
 - Wrabel, DeClerico, and Holdredge registered two knocks apiece, while Blair had a team-high three RBI.
 - Herring swiped a bag and had one hit.
 
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen return to action on Tuesday, March 19 when LVC hosts Penn State Berks at 3:30 p.m.
