How It Happened
CHESTER, Pa. – Lebanon Valley suffered an 88-58 setback to Widener University on Wednesday evening in each team's Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth 2019-20 opener. The Flying Dutchmen slipped to 3-4, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth, while the Pride stayed perfect and improved to 8-0, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth.
Similar to the way things began in LVC's game with Widener in Annville last season, the Pride started off tonight's game on fire and jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead with 16:40 to go in the opening half.
Jeremy Deihm stopped the bleeding with back-to-back jumpers in the paint, and later, with the Dutchmen on the fast break,
Zach Tucker dropped a 3-pointer, bringing LVC to within three at 12-9 with 13:59 to go.
Widener's Connor Laverty answered the Dutchmen's spurt by netting a trey, followed by a free throw and then a layup by Kolbey Woodard that extended the home team's lead back to nine at 18-9 with 11:39 left. LVC didn't go away and continued to claw its way back into the contest. With 5:43 remaining in the first, Tucker and
Joe Wright knocked down back-to-back jumpers, followed by Wright's layup that brought the visiting Dutchmen to within two at 26-24 with 4:36 to go in the first. Once again, Laverty then responded with a triple, followed by Elijah Boyd's jumper and in a flash, Widener was back up by seven. Laverty's trey sparked an 18-7 run that the Pride ended the half on, and Widener went into the locker room up 13 at 44-31.
Early on in the second half,
Trevor Covey hit a 3-pointer that brought LVC to within 13 at 49-33 with 18:07 remaining, but that was as close as the Dutchmen would get, as the Pride continued their hot shooting from beyond the arc and the visitors were unable to mount a comeback and eventually fell 88-58.
