How It Happened
HERSHEY, Pa. – Lebanon Valley dropped a 2-1 decision to King's (Pa.) College in the Flying Dutchmen's 2019-20 home opener inside Hersheypark Arena on Saturday evening. LVC fell to 1-3-0, 0-2-0 UCHC, 0-1-0 MAC, while the Monarchs improved to 1-2-0, 1-2-0 UCHC, 1-1-0 MAC.
After these two teams scored a combined 16 goals in two games a season ago (both of which LVC won), tonight, the scoring took place in just one period, the first. Nearly at the midway point of the first,
Austen Zimmerman led off a shot from the point that was deflected by a King's defenseman into the back of the net, breaking the 0-0 tie and giving the Dutchmen the 1-0 lead.
Just over two minutes after Zimmerman's tally, the Monarchs' Jerry Scatena evened the score at 1-1 after he found the back of the net off a nice feed from Eric Menninger. Then, with just over four minutes to go in the opening period, Tommy Cahill found the back of the net for King's from Michael DiSchiavi and Josh Edwards, putting the Monarchs on top at 2-1.
In the closing minutes of the second period, LVC got a big break when a King's player was called for a five-minute major and a game misconduct, giving the Dutchmen a long man-advantage that carried over into the third. Unfortunately for LVC, the Monarchs' killed off the five-minute penalty and stayed ahead at 2-1.
Later in the third, with their net empty, the Dutchmen peppered the Monarchs' Tyler Sayger, who was making his collegiate debut, but the rookie stood tall and came up big for King's, allowing the visitors to hold on for the narrow 2-1 victory.
