How It Happened
HERSHEY, Pa. – SUNY Cortland held off a late Lebanon Valley charge and hung out for a 4-3 win over the Flying Dutchmen on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference men's ice hockey action. LVC moved to 1-4-0, while the Red Dragons jumped to 2-3-0.
With just over five minutes remaining in regulation, Cortland's Ethan Homitz netted his second of the game off an assist from Logan Blaser to give the visiting Red Dragons a 4-2 lead. Just over a minutes later, Homitz was whistled for a tripping penalty, giving LVC the late man-advantage. The Dutchmen took advantage when
Brad Viola scored his second of the game and second of his young career from
Danny Galvez and
Felix Takacsi-Nagy, cutting Cortland's lead to just 4-3 with 3:31 to go.
Later, with 2:16 to go, Connor Beck went to the penalty box for an elbowing penalty, and LVC pulled goalie
Henry Burns, giving the Dutchmen a two-man advantage. The Dutchmen ripped three shots on net, but Luca Durante was there each time and LVC narrowly fell 4-3.
The Red Dragons were the first to light the lamp this afternoon, beginning with Ian Keller's goal late in the first. That score held up until Beck scored at 5:29 of the second. LVC got one back less than four minutes later when Viola scored his first-career goal from
Max Loga. Then, in the third, Homitz scored his first of the game making it 3-1, but
