How It Happened
GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley field hockey team could not overcome a two-goal halftime deficit as they fell to the 11th-ranked Messiah Falcons in the MAC Commonwealth Championship by a 4-1 score. Messiah will advance to the NCAA Tournament by earning the MAC Commonwealth's automatic bid.

Messiah controlled play in the first half as the Falcons fired off three shots and earned two penalty corners in the opening 15 minutes while shutting LVC out in both categories. The Dutchmen defense was bending but not breaking as they kept Messiah off the scoreboard for a majority of the quarter. With 50 seconds left in the first quarter, Messiah finally got by the LVC defense and Emily Knepp's goal gave Messiah a 1-0 lead after one quarter.

The second quarter Messiah score a goal early in the period when Josie Weaver finished off a Taylor Wiederrecht pass to double the Falcons lead over LVC. The Dutchmen would get their offense going midway through the quarter as they fired off three shots but were just unable to find the net with any of the attempts and LVC faced a 2-0 deficit at the half.

The third quarter saw Messiah pin LVC inside their own defensive half for a majority of play and the Falcons grabbed a pair of goals, one by Hannah Palm and the other by Widerrecht, in a span of 1:26 to put some breathing room between them and the Dutchmen as Messiah led 4-0 midway through the third. The Dutchmen would get on the board with just 24 seconds left in the third quarter when Mikayla Poole was able to find the back of the net. The fourth quarter was a scoreless period as Messiah topped the Dutchmen 4-1 in the MAC Commonwealth Championship.
