How It Happened
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Two goals in the final minutes of the third period propelled Wilkes University past Lebanon Valley by a 4-3 score on Friday evening in UCHC and MAC Men's Ice Hockey action. The Flying Dutchmen dropped to 1-2-0, 0-1-0 UCHC, 0-1-0 MAC, while the Colonels improved to 1-1-0, 1-0-0 UCHC, 1-0-0 MAC.
5:51 into the third period,
Danny Galvez netted a PP-goal from
Ziki Mroz and
Alex Borowiec to put the visiting Dutchmen ahead 3-1. Less than two minutes later, Wilkes began to mount a comeback, beginning with Tyson Araujo's goal on the man-advantage, bringing the home team to within one at 3-2.
It looked as though LVC was going to hold on for the narrow win, but Joey Pasquini evened the game for the Colonels with a goal with just 2:08 remaining in the game. Then, just 19 seconds later, Phil Erickson put Wilkes on top 4-3 when he found the back of the net. From there, the Dutchmen were unable to get
Henry Burns off the ice for the extra skater and were edged by Wilkes 4-3.
The Colonels struck first in the opening period when Araujo scored his first of the game with 53 seconds to go in the frame. That score held up through one period of play, but early in the second with the Dutchmen on the power play,
Tino Alunni scored an unassisted goal to tie things up at 1-1. 40 seconds into the third, Alunni broke the 1-1 tie with a goal from
Jared Karas and Ziki Morz.
