How It Happened
HENNIKER, N.H. – New England College netted a late third-period goal and eventually edged Lebanon Valley 3-2 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's ice hockey action. The Flying Dutchmen slipped to 1-1-0, while the Pilgrims improved to 1-1-0.
After neither team could find the back of the net in the opening period, the second was quite the different story as each team netted a pair. 3:37 into the second, New England's Nikita Pintusov scored from Carlos Fornaris and Daniel Bergqvist, but six minutes later, the Dutchmen answered when
Austen Zimmerman netted his first of the young season from
Jared Karas and
Justin Hall to even the game at 1-1.
Less than four minutes after Zimmerman provided the equalizer,
Cole Hepler put LVC up by one after a goal from Hall. Then, with 1:15 to go in the second, it was the Pilgrims who scored the equalizer when Fornarnis found the back of the net off assists from Connor Inger and Trevor Momot. After two goals by each team in the second, the squads went into the locker room tied at 2-2 after two periods of action.
In the third period, the Dutchmen battled, but were unable to come up with the go-ahead goal. With just over five minutes left, Patrick DeBlois broke the 2-2 tie with a goal from Connor Inger and Trevor Momot. From there, the visiting Dutchmen couldn't come up with the tying goal and narrowly fell 3-2.
