How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley women's basketball team used swarming defense to outlast Mount Aloysius College, 54-41, for their first win on the season in the opening match of the Rinso Marquette Tournament. LVC advances to the championship match against DeSales tomorrow afternoon.
The Mounties held an early 6-3 lead just over four minutes into the opening quarter before LVC would clamp down on the defensive end. The Dutchmen would end the quarter on a 9-0 run and held the opposition scoreless for the final 5:48 of the first quarter. The second quarter saw another Dutchmen run, this time an 8-3 run to grow their lead to 20-12 midway through the second. A
Sara White three-pointer with just 1:13 remaining in the half would give the Dutchmen their largest lead of the half at nine points. The Mounties would score in the final minute bringing the score to 23-16 in favor of the Dutchmen at the intermission.
Emily Mealey would score four quick points in the opening minute of the second half as LVC's advantage ballooned to double digits. The Dutchmen opening the half on a 10-3 run to push their lead to 14 after a
Daelyn Stabler jumper and LVC was in complete control. The Mounties would cut into the lead a little as LVC led by 10 after three quarters.
To open the fourth quarter,
Morgan Bamberger knocked down a three-ball to essentially put the game out of reach as Mount Aloysius would never get the game within single digits for the remainder of the game and LVC would advance to the championship game with a 54-41 victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Emily Mealey recorded her third straight double-double with team highs in points and rebounds. She finished with 17 points and 13 boards.
- Jaime Youngkin notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while also adding four blocks.
- Kennedy Kuffa also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
- Neither team lit it up offensively as LVC shot just 30.9% from the floor, but the Dutchmen defense held the Mounties to just 27.5%
- LVC outrebounded the Mounties 57 to 33.
Who's Next?
LVC will take on DeSales University, who defeated Salisbury 75-59 in the other matchup, in the Rinso Marquette Tournament championship. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. in Sorrentino Gymnasium.
