How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley took down Penn State Schuylkill 83-81 in overtime in the Flying Dutchmen's 2019-20 home opener and their first game of the 2019 Rinso Marquette Tournament inside Sorrentino Gymnasium on Friday evening in non-conference men's hoops action. LVC moved to 1-1, while the Lions dropped to 0-5.
 
With just 37 seconds remaining in regulation, Schuylkill's Tariq Meredith made a layup to bring the visiting Lions to within one point at 70-69. Later, with 12 ticks left on the clock, Zach Tucker knocked two huge free throws that proved to be quite significant. After an LVC timeout, Schuylkill had a chance to tie things up and with four seconds left, Price Szeliga drilled a 3-pointer, sending the game into overtime in thrilling fashion.
 
Early on it the extra period, it was a back-and-forth affair until Tucker knocked down a jumper, followed by Justin Baker's fast-break layup that put LVC up 82-78 with a minute to go. The Lions answered with three straight points and came to within one of the Dutchmen at 82-81 with 30 seconds to go, but this time, LVC didn't allow a comeback thanks to Tucker's steal with one second left that sealed the game for the Dutchmen.
 
Early on, Schuylkill jumped out to a 12-7 lead, capped by Trustin Napier's trey. Mason Green answered with a triple of his own and that sparked a 15-2 run by LVC and the Dutchmen went up by eight at 22-14 with 8:03 remaining in the first half. From there, the home team maintained their comfy lead until the Lions cut LVC's lead to three after Ryan Worrell's 3-pointer made it 33-30. Collin Jones stopped the bleeding with a layup, followed by AJ Catanzaro's free throw that put the Dutchmen up 36-30 heading into the halftime break.
 
LVC maintained a double-digit lead in the opening minutes of the second half until Khari Thompson hit a 3-pointer with 15:51 left to make it a 46-39 lead for the Dutchmen. Then, at the 11:48 mark, Catanzaro hit a layup to put the Dutchmen up 58-47, but the Lions answered with a fast-break layup, followed but another trey at 9:52, cutting the home team's lead to just six at 58-52. Schuylkill continued its push and even took the lead with 4:54 left after Lamonttea Brown's 3-pointer. The back-and-forth action continued from then until the Lions hit the three that sent the game into overtime.
 
Inside the Numbers
 - Justin Baker led LVC with 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting. The team captain added eight rebounds and a block.
 - Zach Tucker finished with 15 points, five assists, and a pair of steals, with his most important one coming in the final seconds of overtime to seal the win.
 - Jordan Abdo netted 10 points, as did Mason Green.
 - Trevor Covey chipped in nine points for LVC.
 - The Lions were led by Price Szeliga who netted a game-high 20 points.
 - The Dutchmen shot 52.7-percent from the field, while Schuylkill shot 39.7-percent.
 - The Lions chucked up 41 3-pointers and made 16 of them.
 - LVC led in points off turnovers at 31-23.
 - Schuylkill dominated in bench points at 62-24.
 - The Dutchmen led in points in the paint at 44-22 and fast-break points at 18-6.
 
Who's Next?
LVC is back in action tomorrow in the 2019 Rinso Marquette Championship game, where the Dutchmen will battle Mt. Aloysius, who defeated FDU-Florham 68-60 earlier today.
