How It Happened
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Lebanon Valley took down Saint Anselm 3-1 in the Flying Dutchmen's 2019-20 season opener on Friday evening. LVC moved to 1-0-0, while the Hawks dropped to 0-1-0.

The Dutchmen got the hot start they were looking for when Matt Emerick found the back of the net off an assist from Kevin Van Bokkelen just 1:38 into the opening period, giving the visitors an early one-goal advantage. Two minutes later, the Dutchmen were tested when LVC was called for a five-minute major. Henry Burns and the Dutchmen defense didn't allow any shots on goal after killing the five-minute penalty and continued to lead 1-0. Later in the first, with LVC on the power play, Ziki Mroz got his first collegiate point in his first game when he got a pass from Jared Karas and delivered the puck to Tino Alunni who scored to make it 2-0 in favor of the Dutchmen after one period of action.

In the second period, LVC made it 3-0 when Emerick scored again, this time from Skyler Pugh, just 51 seconds into the middle period. Then, with just over seven minutes remaining in the second, Saint Anselm's Ryan Spillane brought the home team to within two after netting a goal from Trey Aiello, but LVC kept the Hawks at bay for the rest of the period and held a two-goal lead heading into the third. In the final period, LVC's defense along with Burns continued to stand tall and Burns needed to make just three saves in the final period to lead the Dutchmen to a 3-1 victory.
