How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. –
Madison Carper's strike on a free kick with just 12 seconds left in double overtime to lift Lebanon Valley's women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Alvernia in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday afternoon. The Dutchmen improve to 5-9, 2-4 while Alvernia drops to 3-13, 0-5 on the year.
The first half was controlled by the Dutchmen with a majority of play taking place in the offensive third for LVC. The Dutchmen would fire off 13 shots compared to just three for the Golden Wolves in the first half, but neither team was able to find the net and the game would reach intermission scoreless.
The second half was more of the same with LVC outshooting Alvernia 11-4 in the half. The Dutchmen continued to put immense pressure on the Alvernia defense as LVC had seven corner kicks in the second half but the Golden Wolves would hold tough on defense not allowing the Dutchmen to finish off any of their corner kicks. The game would head to overtime still scoreless.
In overtime, the Dutchmen found their second wind as they completely dominated overtime as far as possession is concerned. LVC held the Alvernia offense without a shot in the first overtime and the Dutchmen rattled off a trio of shots in close by the goal but still were held off the scoreboard and the game would head to a second overtime, the first double OT the Dutchmen have played in this season. In the second overtime, LVC continued to control possession, and the Dutchmen would take advantage of an Alvernia foul late in the period.
Madison Carper had a free kick opportunity from about 20 yards out on the right wing with time running down in the final overtime period. Carper would place the kick in the top left corner of the net with just 12 ticks left on the clock to give LVC the 1-0 victory.
