How It Happened
CHESTER, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley volleyball squad clinched a spot in the postseason as they picked up a four-set victory over Widener University on Wednesday evening. LVC is now 14-11, 4-2 for the season, clinching a spot in the Commonwealth conference tournament, while Widener falls to 7-19, 2-4.
The opening set went back-and-forth to the midway point as the score was tied, 12-12, before the Dutchmen rattled off 10 consecutive points to take a 22-12 advantage and grab firm control of the set. A kill by
Amanda Sides would clinch the set, 25-16.
The second set saw the Pride jump ahead of LVC early with a 6-1 advantage. The Dutchmen would battle back eventually taking their first lead of the set at 18-17. The set would stay close as the score was tied 23-23 before Widener would win the final two points to even the match at one set apiece.
In the third set, LVC grabbed the early lead 8-3 before Widener answered with six straight points to take a 9-8 advantage. Later in the set, the Dutchmen were in danger of dropping the set as they trailed 23-19, but would win five consecutive points to take a 24-23 lead. The Dutchmen would eventually win the set 26-24. The fourth set was all LVC late as they trailed 15-14 followed by an 11-6 run to close out the set, 25-21, and win the match three sets to one.
Reily Shelly led LVC offensively with a career-high 21 kills.
Mikiah Sangrey added 11 kills followed by Sides who recorded nine.
Emily Bartlett tallied 47 assists in the win, her second-most in a single game on the year. Bartlett also led the Dutchmen defensively with 16 digs, followed by
Alice Thorsen and
Julia Rill with 14 and 11 digs respectively.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen are back home next time out as they host their second tri-match of the campaign on Saturday. LVC will open up the day with a matchup against Eastern University at 10 a.m. followed by a match with Moravian College at 2 p.m.
