Box Score 2 Lebanon Valley def. Eastern 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-8)
How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's volleyball team picked up a par of wins in their tri-match against Eastern and Moravian. The Dutchmen topped the Eagles in five sets to open up the day followed by a three-set sweep of Moravian. The Dutchmen improve to 16-11 overall with the two victories.
In the first match of the day, the Dutchmen found themselves in a tightly-contested match with Eastern University. The first set would go back and forth throughout. LVC led 19-16 a little after the midway point of the set before Eastern would rattle of four straight points to take a 20-19 advantage. The Dutchmen would respond with a 6-3 run to close out the set and take the first set over the Eagles.
In the second set, the Dutchmen again held a late lead, this time by a 20-17 mark. The Eagles would end the set winning eight consecutive points and tie the match at one set apiece. The third set would also go to Eastern in a set that stayed within a few points for the entirety of the set. The Eagles would win five of the final seven points to close out the set and put the Dutchmen in a 2-1 hole.
The Dutchmen would respond in the fourth set fairly comfortably. LVC trailed 3-2 early in the set and would go on to hold the lead for the remainder of the set, ending the set on a 5-2 run to force a decisive fifth set. In the fifth set, the Dutchmen would jump ahead of the Eagles early and never look back. LVC led 7-3 quickly out of the gate and would not allow the Eagles to get any closer than three points. LVC would win five of the final seven points to close out Eastern and take the five-set match.
Jayna Class led the Dutchmen offensively with 15 kills, as well as three service aces and five blocks.
Reily Shelly also added 14 kills and three aces in the win.
Amanda Sides also recorded 11 kills for the Dutchmen.
Emily Bartlett led the way with 42 assists. Defensively,
Kaitlyn Reed led LVC with 19 digs followed up by
Alice Thorsen with 16 and
Julia Rill with 14.
In the Dutchmen's second match of the afternoon, LVC topped Moravian College 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-21)
In the opening set, LVC held a small 13-11 lead before they would grab firm control of the match winning seven consecutive points to stretch their lead out to nine. The Dutchmen would not slow up and cruise to a 25-13 set win to start off the match. The second set was back-and-forth with Moravian holding an 11-10 lead midway through the set before the Dutchmen would close out the set on a 15-6 run to win 25-17 and take firm control of the match with a two-set lead.
In the third set, the two teams would battle closely throughout with neither team able to grab much of an advantage. Late in the set, LVC led 19-18 and would not look back, winning six of the final nine points to win the set, 25-21, and earn the sweep of Moravian.
Mikiah Sangrey led the way offensively with 13 kills followed by
Amanda Sides with nine and
Reily Shelly with eight.
Emily Bartlett led the Dutchmen in assists with 34.
Alice Thorsen led the way with five service aces while
Julia Rill added three aces herself.
Kaitlyn Reed led the Dutchmen defensively with 12 digs followed by Thorsen with 11.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen will celebrate Senior Day their next time out when LVC plays host to Lycoming College on Tuesday evening. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Sorrentino Gymnasium.
