Lebanon Valley def. Marywood 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-9)
How It Happened
ALRINGTON, Va. – Lebanon Valley's volleyball team split their two matches at the Marymount Tri-Match on Saturday evening. The Dutchmen topped Marywood in their opening match in straight sets but would drop a four-setter to host Marymount in the nightcap.
Against Marywood, the Dutchmen came out firing on all cylinders as they jumped ahead of the Pacers early opening up a 10-8 lead. The Dutchmen would then go on a 15-4 run to end the first set including five of the last six points as LVC easily took the opening set 25-12.
In the second set, it was Marywood opening up the early advantage 9-6 after scoring five consecutive points. The Dutchmen would respond nicely with a 10-1 run to take a 16-10 lead and back in control of the set. LVC would not allow the Pacers back in the set and a the 25-15 set win was capitalized by a
Mikiah Sangrey kill. The third set was all LVC. The score was tied 4-4 before the Dutchmen would win 21 of the final 26 points to cruise to the 25-9 win and a sweep of the Pacers.
Offensively for the Dutchmen,
Amanda Sides and
Jayna Class led the way with 11 kills apiece followed by Sangrey with 10. Class also added three blocks.
Kaitlyn Reed and
Julia Rill led LVC with three service aces each.
Emily Bartlett led the way with 34 assists for the Dutchmen. Bartlett also led the Dutchmen defensively with 16 digs followed by
Reily Shelly who recorded 11 digs.
In the Dutchmen's second match of the evening, LVC fell to Marymount University in 3-1 (25-12, 25-22, 26-28, 25-18).
In the Dutchmen's second match of the day, LVC took on host Marymount and found themselves in an early 7-2 hole. LVC would pull within two point at 7-5 but that would be as close as they would get in the first set as Marymount when on multiple runs and would eventually take the first set 25-12. The second set was full of runs by either team as whenever one side would get some breathing room, the other would get right back in the set with a run of their own. LVC led late in the set 19-18 after a service ace by Bartlett. Marymount would go on to win the seven of the final 10 points to win the second set 25-22 and take control of the match.
The third set was back-and-forth and tightly contested throughout with the score tied late 19-19. Marymount would win the next two points followed by four consecutive points from LVC and the Dutchmen led 23-21. The Saints would then win three in a row themselves and had were serving for the match. LVC would not go down and battled back to push the score to a tiebreaker and would win three straight points after trailing 26-25 to win 28-26 and force a fourth set.
The fourth set was all Saints early as they opened up a 14-7 advantage. LVC would claw themselves back into the set winning four points in a row to push the score to 15-12 midway through the set. That was the closest the Dutchmen would get to the Saints as Marymount would take the set 25-18 and the match three sets to one.
Class led the way offensively with 14 kills followed by Shelly who recorded 11 kills on the day. Bartlett led the Dutchmen with 37 assists and three service aces.
Alice Thorsen recorded a team-high 20 digs and Rill added nine digs as well.
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen will continue the conference portion of their schedule with a matchup against Widener University on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Chester, Pa.
