How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley women's soccer team were edged in overtime, 1-0, on Homecoming Weekend at the hands of the Hood College Blazers. The Dutchmen controlled play for virtually the entire contest but were unable to get any of their 39 shots to find nylon and a Blazer corner kick led to the game's only score in overtime to down LVC.
The first half of play was played entirely on the Hood College defensive end of the field as the Dutchmen offense was relentless in their attack of the Blazers but could not get the goal they needed. LVC outshot Hood 18-2 in the first 45 minutes but Lydia Erickson, the Hood goalkeeper, made 10 saves in the half to keep the game scoreless into the intermission.
The second half was more of the same for the Dutchmen offense as LVC continued to put pressure on Hood's defense by firing 17 shots in the half but again were shutout, thanks to stellar goaltending by Erickson. In regulation, LVC outshot the Blazers 35-8, including 18-1 shots on goal. The Dutchmen defense would not allow Hood any offensive chances, holding the Blazers without a shot on goal in the second half and the game would head to overtime still scoreless.
In extra time, Hood would finally get an offensive chance as they earned a corner kick with under two minutes to play in the first overtime period. Erin Scarborough sent in the corner and found the foot of Cassidy O'Neill. O'Neill would relay a touch-pass to Melissa Merritt who found the back of the net, handing the Dutchmen the tough 1-0 defeat.
