How It Happened
HERSHEY, Pa. – Neumann University netted four goals in the third period to edge Lebanon Valley 4-3 in UCHC women's ice hockey action and the Flying Dutchmen's opening game of the new year. LVC fell to 2-10-0, 1-9-0 UCHC, while the Knights improved to 3-10-0, 2-6-0 UCHC.

The Dutchmen held a comfortable 2-0 advantage heading into third-period action, but Neumann broke through just 1:04 into the period when Jordyn Cholish netted a goal on the power play to bring the visitors to within two. Just over five minutes later, though, Mychaela Pitta answered and found the back of the net for the second time, off assists from Emma Stillwaggon and Olivia Cindrich, to put the Dutchmen back up by two at 3-1.

Then, at 12:02 and the Knights again on the player-advantage, Jackie Schneider scored to again make it a one-goal game at 3-2. Just 1:35 later, Claudia Trionfo tied things up at 3-3, then 27 seconds later, Katelyn Brown scored what proved to be the game-winner. Throughout the final six minutes of action, LVC saw several scoring chances, but Helen Cooney stood tall. Jill Moffatt was pulled from between the pipes with 45 seconds left, and with 18 ticks to go, Neumann's Brown was called off for interference to give the Dutchmen a slight window with a 6-on-4 advantage. In the final seconds, Cindrich had a good look to tie it, but Cooney made the stop and the Knights hung on for the narrow win.

LVC netted the contest's opening goal in interesting fashion. With just one second remaining in the first period, Cindrich sent a shot from the red line towards the net, and it looked as though Cooney thought the period was over, but the shot snuck into the back of the net just as the buzzer sounded. After the refs got together, they deemed it a good goal and the Dutchmen went into the first with a 1-0 lead.

In the second, the Dutchmen padded their advantage when Pitta scored her first collegiate goal thanks to assists from Darby Seymour and Amy Templeman. For the remainder of the period, neither team could find the back of the net and LVC went into the third with a 2-0 advantage.
