How It Happened
BOSTON, Mass. – In the opening game of the 2019 Boston Landing Collegiate Invitational, Lebanon Valley doubled up Suffolk 4-2 in the Flying Dutchmen's first game of the new year. LVC improved to 6-3-2, while the Rams dropped to 4-8-0.
The opening period was scoreless for the majority until
Travis Acker broke the 0-0 tie when he found the back of the net off assists from
Skyler Pugh and
Tyler Romel to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 advantage with just under four minutes left in the first.
Matt Forslund stopped all 11 shots he faced in the first and LVC went into the second period with a narrow 1-0 lead.
4:50 into the second period,
Brett Johnson, the UCHC's leader in points and goals, padded his stats when he deflected a Suffolk defenseman's pass in the Rams' zone and generating a mini-breakaway where the senior didn't miss, beating Michael Levine to increase the Dutchmen's lead to 2-0. Later in the second, however, with Suffolk on the man-advantage, the Rams' Jack Kelly brought his team to within one with a power-play goal. LVC minimized the damaged, though, and again went into the next period up by one goal.
Not much action occurred throughout most of the third period until the final two minutes. With 1:58 remaining,
Bryan Hovanec found the back of the net off an assist from Johnson, putting the Dutchmen ahead by two at 3-1. Then, with its goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Suffolk came to within one yet again when Joseph Mortillaro scored with just 34 seconds remaining. Johnson, however, scored on an empty net from
TJ Sneath with five seconds remaining to ice the game for LVC at 4-2.
