How It Happened
Lea Dungan's double-overtime goal gave Lebanon Valley's women's soccer team a thrilling 2-1 victory over King's (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon at Herbert Field. The Dutchmen jumped to 3-2-1, while the Monarchs fell to 3-4.
With just 2:08 remaining in the second overtime period, LVC drew a foul about 25 yards outside of the net and slightly to the right. After some deliberation, Dungan ripped a shot that went over the diving hands of King's goalkeeper Tara Bender and into the back of the net for the defender's first career tally.
The Monarchs were the first to score this afternoon when Danielle Putnam served a pass to Kara Keim and Keim's shot from the right found its way into the net for the 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. It didn't take LVC long to even the score, however, as
Katie Goldsmith was fouled in the box in the 28th minute and was awarded a penalty kick. She chose to go left and the ball tipped off Bender's hands and into the back of the net for Goldsmith's third score of the season. For the remainder of the half and all of the second, neither team could score and the game went into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Dutchmen controlled pace and saw a solid chance when
Angela Strock got a shot off, but Bender was there for the save in the 100th minute. Then, just 30 seconds later,
Lucy McGloshen had another solid scoring opportunity, but Bender made the stop and the match went into a second extra period.
Up to that point,
Brianna Mumma saw LVC's best chance in double overtime when she let go a shot from about 35 yards out in the 105th, but it did the post and the game went on until Dungan's dagger in the 108th minute.
