Volleyball Splits at Rowan’s Tri-Match

Lebanon Valley def. Rowan 3-1 (28-30, 25-20, 25-19, 25-18)

How It Happened
GLASSBORO, N.J. – Lebanon Valley won its opening match at Rowan's Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen dropped the first set against the hosts before winning the next three to take the match 3-1. LVC improved to 5-6, while the Profs dropped to 10-6.

Rowan jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the first set thanks to a 6-0 run after the Dutchmen were up 9-8. LVC hung around, though, and later with the Profs up 21-18, the Dutchmen scored three consecutive points, including a kill from Jayna Class, to knot the set at 21-21. The two teams continued to trade points and with LVC ahead 28-27, Rowan rattled off three straight tallies to take the opening set 30-28.

The Dutchmen didn't quit after being down a set and held a 13-12 advantage before notching four consecutive points which included a kill from Jess Attieh, a Reily Sheilly service ace, and back-to-back kills by Class, to open up a five-point lead at 17-12. Rowan battled back and came to within a point at 20-19, but the Dutchmen quickly shut the door and answered with three consecutive points to eventually take the second at 25-20 to even the match at 1-1.

Tied at 7-7 in the third set, three consecutive attack errors by the Profs gave LVC a 10-7 advantage and the Dutchmen never looked back and never relinquished their lead from there. Rowan got close at 21-18, but after an attack error and back-to-back kills from Shelly and Mikiah Sangrey, LVC took a 24-18 lead and went on to win the third 25-19 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, the Dutchmen held a slight lead at 4-3 before LVC scored the next four points to take an 8-3 lead. The Profs answered with a 6-3 spurt to come to within one at 11-9, but Attieh stop the run with a kill from Jensen Burnheimer to put the Dutchmen up by three at 12-9. Later, LVC held a commanding 21-13, but Rowan didn't go away easily and scored four consecutive points to come to within four at 21-17. LVC's offense then put away the Profs for good when Shelly and Attieh registered two straight kills and the Dutchmen went on to take the fourth set 25-18 to win the match 3-1.

Inside the Numbers Against Rowan
 - Attieh had her best offensive game of the season and finished with 20 kills and a .475 hitting percentage. She added two aces, two blocking assists, and six digs.
 - Shelly had nine kills and a .348 percentage to go along with 19 digs.
 - Emily Smeltz was all over the court and registered a career-high 29 digs.
 - Burnheimer led the way with 45 assists and nine digs for LVC.
 - Reina Eckman notched six blocks, while Sangrey added four.
 

Hunter def. Lebanon Valley 3-0 (21-25, 17-25, 18-25)

In LVC's second match of the day, the Dutchmen dropped a 3-0 decision to Hunter. LVC now sits at 5-7, while the Hawks, located in New York, N.Y., improved to 10-2.

In the first set, Hunter hopped out to an early 10-9 advantage, but three consecutive LVC points put the Dutchmen ahead 12-10. Later, with LVC up 14-12, two straight points made it a 16-12 first set. Unfortunately, the Hawks battled back and with the Dutchmen up 20-18, Hunter scored seven of the final eight points to take the opening set 25-21.

In the middle set, an early run 6-0 run from the Hawks with LVC up 5-3 made it a 9-5 set. LVC was unable to complete a comeback and dropped the middle set 25-17. Then, in the third set, the Dutchmen found themselves down 12-8, but three consecutive kills, including a pair from Attieh and one from Eckman, brought LVC to within one at 12-11. Hunter, however, went on a 7-1 spurt to take a seven-point lead at 19-12, which proved to be the difference as the Hawks went on to take the set 25-18 to win the match.

Inside the Numbers Against Hunter
 - Burnheimer finished with three blocks for the Dutchmen.
 - Smeltz dug out 16 more balls for LVC, while Shelly recorded nine and Kaitlyn Reed chipped in seven.
 - Attieh had seven kills and a service ace and Class added six kills.
 - Taylor Haiduk led Hunter's offense with 13 kills.

Who's Next?
LVC heads to Middletown on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. to battle Penn State Harrisburg.
