How It Happened
Lebanon Valley finished off its weekend at the William Smith Classic, falling by the slimmest of margins in a 3-2 loss to the hosts on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 16.
Cecile Kat's season-opening tear continued for the Flying Dutchmen (2-4), as she accounted for both of the team's goals. The sophomore opened the game's scoring with a conversion following a penalty corner that was inserted by teammate
Jenna Lysakowski in the ninth minute.
The hometown Herons (3-3) drew even just 30 seconds later when Sophie Craig gathered a rebound and put her shot into the back of the cage at the 10-minute mark.
Kat, as well as LVC's penalty corner unit, struck again after halftime when she deflected a pass from
Hannah Simon past William Smith goalkeeper Alexandra DeVito to reclaim the lead for the Dutchmen with 26:48 left to play.
The Herons responded, however, when Shannon Roycroft connected on a score off an assist from Emily Leonard in the 51st minute. The 2-2 tie was quickly broke by the home team when Craig netted her second marker of the day when she struck from left of goal with 12:17 remaining.
LVC was aggressive in the closing minutes, earning six penalty corners but the William Smith defense led by DeVito proved game in crunch time, turning away four Dutchmen attempts in the final eight minutes to preserve the narrow victory.
