How It Happened
READING, Pa. –
Brenden Ward dominated Albright in a complete-game, 2-0 shutout-victory over the Lions in the opening game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Dutchmen improved to 8-11, 4-5 MAC Commonwealth, while Albright dropped to 7-10, 3-7 MAC Commonwealth.
LVC's offense delivered a two-run fifth inning, which was more than Ward needed.
Trevor Bertsch tripled down the right field line to plate
Nick O'Shea for the game's first run, then
Bryan Towers reached on an error to score Bertsch.
Ward put together one of the best performances on the mound in recent Dutchmen memory and did not allow a runner past second base in the win.
Inside the Numbers (Game One)
- Ward allowed just four hits in the complete-game shutout, while striking out six batters in his first collegiate win. The freshman induced 14 groundball-outs.
- Bertsch,
TJ Holdredge, and O'Shea each registered a hit for LVC.

How It Happened
A seven-run fourth inning by the Lions propelled Albright to an 11-2 win over LVC in the nightcap, stopping the Dutchmen from getting the sweep.
The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring three in the second and one in the third. The Dutchmen got on the board in the top of the fourth when Harned doubled down the right field line to plate
Josh Herring and
Michael Leri, but in the bottom of the frame, Albright scored seven runs, which eventually proved to be the difference, and LVC was unable to dig out of the hole, resulting in the 11-2 defeat.
Inside the Numbers
- Marcelli and Herring finished with two hits apiece.
- Harned had two RBI and recorded a double.
- In relief,
Matt Blocksom tossed 1.2 innings and allowed no earned runs while recording a strikeout.
- For the Lions, Adams and Gentry each had two hits and five RBI combined.
Who's Next?
LVC's busy schedule continues tomorrow when the Dutchmen welcome Widener to McGill Field for a 3:30 p.m. game. The two squads split a doubleheader back on March 31.
