How It Happened
YORK, Pa. –
Emily Mealey knocked down a 3-pointer as time expired to give Lebanon Valley a crazy 62-59 victory over York (Pa.) in non-conference women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon. The Dutchmen improved to 7-6, while the Spartans dropped to 5-6.
After holding a comfortable lead for much of the fourth quarter, LVC succumbed to a crucial run by York and the Spartans eventually took a one-point lead after Katie McGowan hit a triple to make it a 57-56 contest with 3:01 remaining. Then, with just 54 ticks left on the clock,
Ashley Kline hit one-of-two free throws to put the Dutchmen ahead 59-57. With 12 seconds to go, Logynn Fuller hit what looked to be a 3-pointer, but her foot was on the line and it went down as a long two that evened the game at 59-59. After LVC's 30-second timeout,
Anne Lehr's shot attempted with a few seconds left was blocked, allowing the Dutchmen to possibly get one more shot off before overtime. On the in-bound pass from Lehr, Mealey got the ball at the top of the key and let off a pure trey that went in as time expired to give the Dutchmen the thrilling victory.
Things were close in the early going as Fuller hit a triple with 3:50 left in the first to tie the game at 10-10. From there, the Spartans finished the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 17-12 lead into the second quarter. In the second, Bamberger opened it up with a 3-pointer, followed by
Veronica Venezia's jumper that allowed LVC to quickly tie the game up again, this time at 17-17. Later on in the second, the Dutchmen went up by two with Lehr's fast-break layup, followed by
Megan Bisco's trey at 2:48 and
Molly Galvin's jumper that put LVC ahead 26-19 with 2:12 left. For the remainder of the quarter, the visiting Dutchmen held on to their advantage and took a 28-22 lead into halftime.
At the 6:18 mark of the third quarter, with LVC ahead by nine at 35-26, York rattled off nine consecutive points to tie the game at 35-35. Lehr stopped the spurt with a jumper and Kline then made a layup, putting the Dutchmen up by four at 39-35 with 2:17 to go in the third. After Kayla Ferris' triple brought the home team to within one at 39-38 with 1:32 to go, Mealey hit back-to-back free throws and then made a layup with 27 seconds left to give LVC a 43-38 lead after three quarters of action.
