How It Happened
HERSHEY, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's men's ice hockey team settled for a 4-4 tie with United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) foe Neumann University on Sunday, Nov. 11 inside The GIANT Center. After neither team could score in the first overtime, new UCHC rules called for a second overtime of 3-on-3 hockey, and the Knights scored with 1:59 remaining, but the game still officially ended in a tie, but Neumann picked up an extra conference point. The Dutchmen moved to 2-1-2, 1-0-2 UCHC, while the Knights now sit at 0-4-2, 0-2-2 UCHC.
11:15 into the opening period, Neumann broke a 0-0 tie when Richie Brusco found the back of the net from Joe Mitchell. Exactly four minutes later,
Tino Alunni knotted the game at 1-1 off a bad-angle goal from
Tyler Romel and
TJ Sneath, and the two squads went into the second period knotted at 1-1.
Brett Johnson broke the tie at the 8:24 mark of the second when he scored off an assist from
Brad Nolan. From there, the Dutchmen's defense stepped up and didn't allow the Knights to find the back of the net, as LVC went into the third period clinging to a one-goal advantage.
Most of today's action happened in the third period and beyond. 3:15 into the third with Neumann on the power play,
Bryan Hovanec broke free and scored a short-handed goal from
Cole Hepler to make it a two-score game at 3-1. Just 25 seconds later, with the Knights still on the power play, Clay Boyd netted a goal to bring the visitors to within one at 3-2. Later in the third, Connor Annett scored a goal for Neumann on the man-advantage to knot the game yet again at 3-3. Then, with less than four minutes remaining, Johnson scored his second of the day off an assist from
Danny Galvez to put the Dutchmen up late at 4-3. With 15 seconds to go and the Knights' goalie pulled, Ryan Swain scored to make it a 4-4 game and send the contest into overtime.
Each team was called for a penalty in the overtime, negated any solid scoring chances for about two minutes. Late in the extra period, Hovanec ripped a shot, but it was saved by Sammy Bernard and the game went into the second overtime where the Knights were able to score and pick up the extra point.
